Professional profile

I completed my Basic Surgical Training in Manchester and my Higher Surgical Training in Bristol. After a glaucoma fellowship in North America (Vancouver Eye Care Center, University of British Columbia, Canada), I was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust in February 2004, with the additional position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds.

As a clinical tutor, I enjoy teaching & lecturing to medical students, optometrists, and doctors alike. I enjoy an active interest in research and regularly attend and present at meetings at International Conferences. I have helped to develop a national glaucoma electronic patient record system.

Summary of experience

I review over 2000 patients with glaucoma each year, and perform over 400 specialist intraocular procedures per year, offering comprehensive treatment for glaucoma including laser iridotomy, laser trabeculoplasty, trabeculectomy with or without mitomycin C, revision of trabeculectomy, bleb needling and Ahmed valve tube implantation. I also perform small-incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery, especially for patients with glaucoma. I am the author of the textbook 'MCQ Companion to the Eye: Basic Sciences in Practice' (published by W.B. Saunders, 2000), and  a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

My specific areas of expertise are:

  • Glaucoma surgery (such as trabeculectomy with mitomycin C)
  • Cataract surgery (routine and complex cases, especially patients with glaucoma)
  • Medical management of glaucoma

Personal profile

I am happily married with two young children. I enjoy a variety of sports: skiing, golf, jogging - I like to see golf balls sail straight off into the horizon, but don't play regularly enough to manage this very often! As a family, we love travelling and recently all returned to Canada as a family to enjoy the magical holiday spirit of British Columbia.
